"Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. And yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, or five times more? Perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless..."

–Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky, as inscribed on Brandon Lee's tombstone (1993)

This zine consists of eight iPhone photos of the moon, inverted, and riso-printed in Mint on the verso of a soft black Japanese speckled paper. The photos were taken over the course of several years as part of a practice of noticing and connection with my friend Sophie (amongst others).

I kind of lucked into making this while taking a Riso-printing workshop at Atelier Circulaire with Le Lin. It pushed me to think of the specific affordances of the Riso, one of which is the ability to print on black paper!

The insert includes the description of an assignment I use in teaching called Acts of Noticing and a short text about the origins of my moon photos practice. Given how many photos of the moon Sophie and I now have, this zine is just a prelude to a larger collection.

This publication acts as a simple, hopefully poetic, argument on the value of attention in these violently distracted times.
